Microneedling Results You Should Expect to See

Thanks in large part to the fact that it’s a minimally invasive therapeutic procedure that is safe for all skin types and tones, microneedling has surged in popularity over the past few years. Not only is it capable of rendering relatively quick results with little downtime and few side effects, microneedling is less expensive than a lot of other cosmetic treatments and often much more effective. Indeed, the vast majority of clients experience positive microneedling results, making it one of the most frequently requested procedures at medical spas today. Take a look at the microneedling results you can expect to see after just one or two treatments:

Temporary Warm, Tight Skin

Our clinicians here at The Institute of Natural Health use the only FDA-approved microneedling device currently available. Called “SkinPen,” this tool pierces the dermis using 12 tiny needles, creating thousands of micro-injuries in the skin. These tiny wounds trigger an immediate immune response within the body that is meant to begin repair of the damage. Blood flow is increased to the area, which results in warm, inflamed skin. However, this effect is temporary and simply signals that the body is already working hard to generate healthy skin cells to replace the damaged ones.

Reduction of the Appearance of Wrinkles and Fine Lines

The tiny cuts to the skin made during a microneedling procedure also stimulate the production of collagen. Collagen is a protein that helps the body build bones, muscles and other types of tissues, such as skin. Its tightly-bound fibers provide support for cellular growth — in the dermis, working to keep skin firm and strong. Unfortunately, as we age collagen production naturally decreases, causing skin to often lose elasticity and firmness. The result: sagging, wrinkled skin. The good news is that collagen production can be rejuvenated, with the body sending it in when it’s specifically needed for tissue repair. For instance, when skin is damaged (such as during a microneedling procedure), the body must generate a foundation on which new skin cells can begin to grow. Thus, it sends in special cells called fibroblasts (among other things) to make collagen, which serves as a support for new tissue growth. The influx of collagen to the skin restores its structure, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. The more collagen present in the skin, the more smooth it will appear!

Increased Radiance, Vibrancy and Glow

Further microneedling results to expect — often within 24 hours!— include enhanced skin radiancy, vibrancy and glow. In addition to increasing blood flow and releasing collagen, the body sends in other biologics, such as elastin, which all work in tandem to create new skin cells and repair skin tissue. Elastin, in particular, works much like collagen to provide shape and strength to skin tissue. As its name suggests, elastin helps to make skin “elastic,” allowing it to resume its shape when pinched, pulled or poked. When there is enough collagen and elastin in the dermis, skin is taut and, therefore, appears more vibrant and youthful.

Of course, microneedling results vary from person to person, but a temporary inflammatory reaction that quickly gives way to healthier, smoother skin is typical for the majority of clients we see here at The Institute of Natural Health. Indeed, microneedling with a SkinPen device has been clinically shown to boost production of collagen, elastin and other biologics; reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles; break down scar tissue; improve skin texture; correct uneven skin tone by diminishing sun, brown and age spots; and effectively treat stretch marks, large pores and loose skin.  In short, microneedling results in healthier, younger-looking skin!
